Social Media of Yesteryear

It was a simpler time back then.. Top 8 friends left no questions… ASL?
Remember the days before poking people, feeding virtual cows, and accidently liking your crush’s profile picture from 3 years ago? Before 140 characters and hashtags… Before screenshots and my stories, there was:

 XANGA

Worse than Facebook statuses, this was an online diary. What my 14 year old self thought was smart to write online, I only hope I never remember my Xanga password again!

 ICQ

The original messenger. “Uh oh”… If you don’t know that sound, how did you survive middle school? The joy of your crush’s flower turning green. Such solid graphics!

 MSN MESSENGER

What color is your friend list going to be today? And make sure you pick the perfect song lyrics to “oh so sneakily” tell everyone what is going on. The spinning people as you signed in made me dizzy in the dial-up Internet days.

 HOTMAIL

I still to this day use my Hotmail account. Luckily, I didn’t pick something like ilovethehansonbrothers@hotmail.com, I actually used my real name even when I created an account back in middle school.  MYSPACE

You knew where you stood with your friends based on your rank in their Top 8 friends. Oh yeah, and creeping was just as easy back then, you could see when someone last logged in. Don’t forget trying to learn HTML coding so you could have the coolest Myspace page.

 EARLY DAYS FACEBOOK

Before there were timelines, you had to have a legitimate college email for a Facebook profile. Now everyone, their mom, and their cat have it. Notes were popular; yes those embarrassing 100 questions you filled out are still there. Never get too used to the layout, it may change tomorrow.
Thankfully, some passwords are long forgotten, but some posts will be out there to haunt you until the end of time. As my high school Spanish teacher always said, “You kids and your SpaceBook and MyFace…
